A minor risk exposure that is left unattended to could degenerate into a huge crisis for any business. Moreso, a risk identified as non-startegic today could have the propensity to transform into becoming a strategic risk for the organisation in the future, depending on the emerging business context. Hence, business leaders need to be held accountable for identifying and managing (effectively) the risks exposures of the organization. Leaders need to pre-emptively identify, understand and put structures in place to mitigate business strategic risk.
Though the authors understand that several risks such as financial, legal, investment, market, environmental etc. do exist however, this paper is focused on the “people risk” in line with the research and professional interests of the authors. The authors consider people risk as a strategic risk. We also believe that this risk requires attention at the strategy level; this we consider as strategic people risk management. Therefore, this article is intended to promote awareness, stimulate thoughts and refocus business leaders, entrepreneurs, and board executives on a critical business risk demanding strategic attention.
